In 2020, I was working two marketing jobs and putting in grueling 80-hour workweek. My passion, however, was in creating art. In April of that same year, I created DomoINK as a side project, which has since grown into a flourishing art and home decor brand, earning me up to $22,000 per month in passive income. I generate these earnings from my website, Etsy, Society6, and big retailers like Target and Home Goods. I have also collaborated with major brands such as Disney, Samsung, Lowe’s, and Dr. Martens.
The best part is that I only spend an average of two hours a day working on my side business. The rest of my time is devoted to my remote job as an interactive designer. Here’s a glimpse into my typical weekly schedule:
Flexibility is a big part of my work-life balance. My full-time job has me working from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm from Monday to Thursday, and 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Fridays. Since I work from home, I’m able to wake up at 8:00 am and spend an hour answering customer emails each morning.
To avoid burnout, I rotate my tasks throughout the week. Mondays are for creating social media content, Tuesdays for fine-tuning tasks, Wednesdays for creating new art pieces, and Thursdays are for learning new art skills or gaining business knowledge. On the weekends, I take time to relax and spend time with loved ones.
On Fridays, I focus on updating my website and coming up with new product ideas to give my customers even more options. Over the last year, I’ve also taken on more freelance projects and have had opportunities to collaborate with companies like Dr. Martens and NASCAR.
As an artist and the founder of DomoINK, I aim to inspire other creatives through my art. I hope to one day see my work in museums, especially to inspire young black creatives, and it’s clear that I’m well on my way to success.
