The ICC Champions Trophy is a highly anticipated event in international cricket, with the 2025 edition set to be hosted in Pakistan, but there’s a new twist to the qualification process that could impact Test-playing nations like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The Sporting News explains which teams will qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.
The qualification process for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy is underway during the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup in India. The top seven teams at the conclusion of the group stage in the ICC ODI World Cup, as well as the host nation, Pakistan, will secure spots in the 2025 Champions Trophy. This has injected unpredictability into the mix and has affected teams like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka who struggled in the 2023 World Cup.
ICC recently unveiled its plans for a new cycle of global events from 2024 to 2031, which includes two editions of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 and 2029. The format for the 2025 edition will be an eight-team tournament with two groups of four teams each, followed knockout stages. Unlike previous editions, the qualification criteria for 2025 have been changed to allow the top seven teams at the conclusion of the ICC ODI World Cup to qualify.
The 2027 men’s ODI World Cup, set to be a 14-team tournament co-hosted South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, will see the top eight teams in the ODI rankings directly qualify for the tournament, along with the two Full Member hosts, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The remaining four teams will be determined through global qualifier tournaments.
