Union Minister for Electronics & Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, has affirmed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s concerns about the misuse of AI and deepfakes.
During the Diwali Milan program at BJP Headquarters in New Delhi on November 17, PM Modi warned about the threats posed artificial intelligence and deepfake technology. He recounted a personal experience in which he saw a fake video of himself performing Garba and urged people to exercise caution.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar echoed PM Modi’s concerns, emphasizing the potential harm, chaos, and incitement of violence caused misinformation and deepfakes powered AI. He highlighted the importance of internet safety and trust for Indian citizens and the government’s commitment to creating and strengthening regulations to address these issues.
Furthermore, Chandrasekhar assured that the government will engage with the industry to prevent deepfakes from creating toxicity on the Indian internet. He also hinted at upcoming initiatives and discussions with the industry to establish a robust framework against deepfakes.
The issue of deepfakes recently gained attention when a video portraying a woman resembling actor Rashmika Manndana went viral. This incident further emphasized the urgency of addressing deepfake technology and its potential impacts on individuals and society.
