Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang predicts that artificial general intelligence will be achieved within five years.

Nvidia CEO, Jensen Huang, predicts that artificial general intelligence (AGI) will be a reality within the next five years. Speaking at the 2023 New York Times DealBook Summit, Huang defined AGI as technology that exhibits basic intelligence “fairly competitive” to a normal human.

During an interview at the summit, Huang stated that he believes that within the next five years, AIs that can complete tests reflecting basic intelligence will emerge. When asked if AGI would refer to AI that can design the chips Nvidia is currently making, Huang agreed, emphasizing that none of Nvidia’s chips today would be possible without AI.

Huang’s thoughts on AGI come amidst a growing concern among business leaders about the potential implications of this technology. Ilya Sutskever, cofounder of OpenAI, warned that AGI could lead to new problems such as the surge of fake news and cyberattacks, while investor Ian Hogarth emphasized the need for regulation to prevent the “obsolescence or destruction of the human race” due to God-like AI.

Huang isn’t the only tech leader with strong beliefs about AGI. Former Meta executive John Carmack and Demis Hassabis, CEO and cofounder of Google’s AI division, have also made predictions about the future of AI.

When reached for comment, Nvidia did not respond to Business Insider’s request.
