Gen Z Accepts Parents’ Use of Location Sharing Apps for Safety, Wall Street Journal Reports
The growing popularity of location tracking apps like Life360 indicates that young people are increasingly comfortable with their parents knowing their whereabouts at all times. According to The Wall Street Journal, downloads of Life360 have doubled in the past two years, with one in nine US families, or 33 million people, now using the app.
Not only Life360, but other apps like Google’s Family Link and Apple’s Find My are also being used Gen Z to share their location with parents and friends, whether it’s during their commute to school, driving, or even on dates.
Aside from safety, location tracking apps can also send alerts for events like car crashes. These tools allow users to control their privacy turning location sharing on and off. However, a survey conducted The Harris Poll in 2022 found that 16% of US adults have the setting activated all the time, indicating a willingness to share their location constantly.
A survey Life360 reveals that 54% of respondents believe it is necessary or generally appropriate for parents to ask their children to share their location at all times. The embrace of location tracking is believed to be linked to the increasing levels of anxiety among younger generations. Dr. Michele Borba, an educational psychologist and spokesperson for Life360, explains that Gen Z has come to rely on location sharing for an added layer of security during uncertain times.
The survey also found that 94% of Gen Z sees the benefits of location sharing, with more than half considering such apps synonymous with safety. Among female Gen Z respondents, 72% believe that location sharing enhances their physical wellbeing.
Long-distance driving and visiting new or dangerous places are the top reasons for using these apps. Furthermore, location sharing has become a way for younger generations to express affection and strengthen their friendships.
Overall, the acceptance of location tracking apps Gen Z reflects a desire for safety and security in an increasingly uncertain world. These apps provide peace of mind for parents and users alike, highlighting their growing importance in today’s digital landscape.
