On Monday, India wrapped up the second Test of their five-match series against England securing a 106-run win at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy Stadium in Visakhapatnam.

After the visitors won the first Tets 28 runs in Hyderabad, India hit back in superb style. They scored 396 in the first innings, led a magnificent double hundred (209) from opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. Number three Shubman Gill also excelled in the third innings with a knock of 104.

But the foundation for the win was laid pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah’s haul of 6/45 in the first innings, which helped India gain a 143-run lead. Bumrah was rewarded with the player of the match award, and on Wednesday reached the No.1 spot in the Test bowling rankings.

Jasprit Bumrah moves to No.1 in ICC Test rankings: How many Indian bowlers have achieved this feat?

Bumrah became the first bowler ever to achieve a number one ranking in each of the three formats; Test, ODI and T20I. In addition, he became the first pace bowler from India to achieve the feat in Test match cricket. Ever since the introduction of the ICC ranking system in 1987, only three Indians have ever reached the summit of Test bowling and all three are currently active players.

Ravichandran Ashwin became the first Indian to top the Test bowling rankings when he first achieved the feat in October 2016. His spin partner in the national setup, Ravindra Jadeja, was the second to do so just five months later. It has taken nearly 7 years for a third Indian bowler to do so.

After the ranking system was also applied to players prior to 1987, special mention must be reserved for India’s famous spin quartet of the 1960s and 1970s. Erapalli Prasanna reached No. 4 and Srinivas Venkatraghavan No. 6 in 1971, while Bishan Singh Bedi achieved a peak ranking of No. 2 and Bhagwat Chandrasekhar No. 3, both in 1974.

How many Indian bowlers have reached ICC No.1 in ODIs and T20Is?

While Bumrah is just the third Indian bowler to reach No.1 in Test cricket, India has more representation in the white ball formats. Former left-arm spinner Maninder Singh was the first to do so, reaching No.1 in ODIs in December 1987. 1983-World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev was India’s first pacer to achieve the feat. Overall, six players have reached No.1 in ODIs.
