MEA Issues Advisory for Indians in Canada Amid Diplomatic Tensions regarding Khalistan Issue: Urgent Caution Required

India has issued a warning to its citizens in Canada, urging them to exercise caution due to the rising anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes in the country. This advisory comes in the midst of escalating tensions between India and Canada over the issue of Khalistan extremism.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released a statement highlighting the threats targeting Indian diplomats and the Indian community members who oppose the anti-India agenda. It advised Indian nationals to avoid traveling to regions and venues in Canada that have witnessed such incidents.

The statement also mentioned that the High Commission and Consulate General of India will remain in contact with Canadian authorities to ensure the safety of the Indian community. Indian students, in particular, are advised to be extremely cautious and vigilant due to the deteriorating security environment in Canada.

To facilitate better communication in case of emergencies or untoward incidents, Indian nationals and students are urged to register with the High Commission of India in Ottawa or the Consulates General of India in Toronto and Vancouver through their respective websites or the MADAD portal madad.gov.in.

Amidst the growing tension between the two nations, Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Additionally, a senior Canadian diplomat was expelled India in a tit-for-tat response to Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s claim that “foreign powers” were involved in the killing of pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The MEA summoned High Commissioner to India Cameron MacKay and informed him about the expulsion of the senior Canadian diplomat. The diplomat has been given five days to leave India. In a statement, the MEA expressed concern over the interference of Canadian diplomats in India’s internal matters and their involvement in anti-India activities.

Sources from the MEA mentioned that the decision to expel the diplomat was based on strong grounds and had been considered for a while. The tensions between India and Canada over the Khalistan extremism issue continue to escalate.
