According to a new study, hydrogen fuel has the potential to be a viable alternative to diesel or gasoline.

Emerging as a cost-competitive and environmentally friendly fuel source, hydrogen is poised to become a viable alternative to traditional liquid fuels, according to research conducted the University of Houston. The study highlights the potential of hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector, particularly in Texas.

This research, titled “Competitive Pricing of Hydrogen as an Economic Alternative to Gasoline and Diesel for the Houston Transportation Sector,” envisions the impact of approximately 5.5 million registered vehicles in Houston adopting hydrogen as a fuel source. The city’s infrastructure and abundant resources make it conducive to the adoption of hydrogen as fuel, with cost-effective production and supply attributes.

The study also compares various hydrogen generation processes, emphasizing the economic and environmental advantages of hydrogen as a fuel source for consumers, businesses, and policymakers in the greater Houston area. Additionally, the potential of sustainable aviation fuels as a key solution for reducing emissions in the aviation sector is highlighted in a related study, which demonstrates a substantial decrease in emissions compared to traditional jet fuel.

As the world seeks cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions, hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel emerge as promising alternatives in the transportation and aviation sectors, contributing to efforts to reduce environmental impact and address climate change concerns. This research contributes valuable insights to the future assessment of environmental impact of new fuels and technologies.
