Anjappam: Providing Accessible and Healthy Food to All
September 20, 2023, 16:36 IST
Anjappam, a chain of economic restaurants, is making a positive impact on society providing accessible and healthy food to economically backward and marginalized sections of society. The initiative was started BobJose Kattikad in Kerala a few years ago, with the aim of restoring faith in humanity and recognizing the value of food.
Located at Pathanamthitta, Ranni, Neyyatinkara, and Changanassery, these restaurants serve a noble cause. Instead of offering food for free, Anjappam charges a nominal cost of Rs 25 per meal. However, they do not compel anyone to pay this amount. Those who cannot afford to pay are encouraged to have the food without any charge. They are also welcome to contribute whatever amount they can, even if it is less than Rs 25.
In an interview with the Kochi Post, the treasurer of the initiative, who preferred to remain anonymous, said, “The money is accepted wholeheartedly, regardless of the amount. We believe that providing food for free may not be acceptable to many individuals.” This approach ensures that those who need it most can avail of the services provided Anjappam.
One unique aspect of Anjappam’s operations is the absence of a billing counter. Instead, there is a contribution box where patrons can offer any amount they wish after having their meal. This innovative arrangement allows Anjappam to provide not just good and healthy food, but also a clean eating space and a hygienic ambience for everyone.
The restaurants exclusively serve vegetarian food and strive to source locally grown vegetables, ensuring both taste and health benefits. Anjappam believes that hunger is a fundamental need for every individual and aims to make food accessible to all, regardless of their financial condition.
Aside from serving meals during the day, Anjappam converts its space into reading areas with donated libraries in the evenings. This inclusive environment welcomes visitors of all backgrounds, irrespective of their caste, creed, religion, sex, age, disability, income, or social status.
Anjappam’s initiative showcases the true essence of humanity, compassion, love, and empathy. It is a testament to the fact that such positive changes can still be seen in society.
