Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reiterated his allegations that Government of India agents are involved in the killing of Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, calling for cooperation from New Delhi in the probe.
Trudeau’s remarks came after India rejected his allegations, terming them as “absurd” and “politically driven.” Trudeau said in a statement, “As I said on Monday, there are credible reasons to believe that agents of the Government of India were involved in the killing of a Canadian on Canadian soil, which is something of utmost and foundational importance in a country of rule of law in the world where international rule-based order matters.”
Trudeau emphasized the rigorous and independent nature of Canada’s justice system and the need to allow justice processes to unfold with utmost integrity. He also shared his concerns regarding the matter with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a “direct and frank conversation.”
Following India’s expulsion of a senior Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat move over Ottawa’s expulsion of an Indian official in relation to the case, Trudeau called upon the Government of India to take the matter seriously and work with Canada to ensure full transparency, accountability, and justice in the case.
Trudeau’s comments were made during a “direct and frank” conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reflecting Canada’s commitment to upholding its values and international rules-based order, even as tensions mount between the two countries.
The PM’s words were further underscored a statement made on Twitter a news outlet.
