OpenAI’s ChatGPT experiencing a widespread outage, company working on a fix
Amid a chaotic week at OpenAI, the company’s chatbot ChatGPT is experiencing a widespread outage Tuesday afternoon. Users of the AI chatbot have been receiving error messages when trying to use the bot.
According to Down Detector, which tracks reports of outages, the platform began seeing a spike in errors around 2 p.m. PT. OpenAI has identified the error and is currently working to fix the issue. The company confirmed that the issue is affecting “non-completion API endpoints” as well.
“We’re continuing to work on a fix,” said OpenAI in a post on its status site. “The underlying issue is due to an issue with our database replicas.”
A spokesperson for OpenAI highlighted a tweet from a developer relations employee at OpenAI, where he acknowledged the elevated error rates and assured that the team is working on a fix.
Business Insider confirmed the outage asking ChatGPT various questions, to which the bot responded with an error message prompting users to contact OpenAI’s help center.
It’s not the first time ChatGPT has experienced an outage. The chatbot had also faced a previous outage earlier this month, which OpenAI announced was caused a targeted DDoS attack.
The outage comes on the heels of a tumultuous week for OpenAI, marked the departure of CEO Sam Altman. Although the company’s board was not completely transparent about the reasons for Altman’s departure, reports suggest that he may be considering a return to the company.
