Elon Musk Expresses Desire to Rebuild Friendship with Google Co-Founder Larry Page After Spat Over AI Safeguards
In a recent episode of Lex Fridman’s podcast, Elon Musk expressed his desire to restore his friendship with Larry Page. Musk stated, “I would like to be friends again with Larry. I haven’t seen him in ages. We were friends for a very long time.”
The dispute reportedly dates back to 2013, when the two clashed over the potential for AI to replace humans at Musk’s birthday party. Page reportedly called Musk a speciesist, while Musk defended his pro-human stance.
Following the argument, Musk attempted to dissuade DeepMind co-founder and CEO Demis Hassabis from signing a deal with Google, then led Page. Google ultimately acquired DeepMind in 2014.
This is not the first time Musk has discussed his strained relationship with Page. In a prior interview with Tucker Carlson, Musk mentioned that Page did not want to talk to him due to Musk’s involvement with OpenAI, which Page took issue with.
Beyond the rift with Page, Musk has also discussed the challenges he faces in his life, describing his mind as a storm and suggesting that most people wouldn’t want to be in his shoes.
