The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm called ‘Midhili.’ The storm is expected to cross the Bangladesh coast near Khepupara with maximum wind speeds of 80 kmph.
According to the IMD, the cyclonic storm is currently centred 190 km east of Paradip (Odisha), 200 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal), and 220 km southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh). It is projected to move north-northeastwards and make landfall on the Bangladesh coast during the night of November 17th or early hours of November 18th.
The cyclone, named ‘Midhili,’ was given the Maldives as part of a naming sequence adopted the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and ESCAP member countries.
In anticipation of Cyclone Midhili, the Purba Medinipur district administration in West Bengal has issued an alert and special guidelines for all blocks in the district. Additional vigilance and rescue teams have been mobilized in Digha to ensure the safety of tourists.
The district magistrate, Tanbir Afzal, assured that proactive measures are in place to respond to the threat posed the cyclone and to minimize any potential problems that may arise.
