India Urges Reforms in the United Nations to Address Ineffectiveness of the Security Council
India has reiterated the need for reforms in the United Nations (UN), stating that the world is unable to resolve disputes through the global organization due to the ineffectiveness of its core body, the UN Security Council. In an address at the UN Security Council debate on October 20, India’s permanent ambassador at the UN, Ruchira Kamboj, called for reforms to overcome the crisis of credibility.
Kamboj emphasized the importance of comprehensive reforms and stated, “Unless we undertake comprehensive reforms and get this house in order, we will continue to face a continuing crisis of credibility.” She further advocated for the New Orientation for Reformed Multilateralism, emphasizing the idea that genuine solidarity cannot exist without trust.
During the debate, Kamboj highlighted the majority support from the Global South for the expansion of the Security Council’s membership. She stated, “An overwhelming majority of countries from the Global South share our conviction that a reform of the UN architecture is no more a question of why, but when and how soon.” Kamboj also congratulated Brazil on their Presidency of the Council for the month of October.
Addressing the issue of trust in multilateral institutions, Kamboj called for an honest conversation on rebuilding trust. She mentioned that bilateral discussions and regional mechanisms have been more effective in achieving mutually acceptable solutions to resolve disputes.
India also welcomed the idea of resolving disputes through discussion and highlighted the significance of regional and sub-regional organizations in finding better solutions to conflicts in their respective regions.
In conclusion, India’s call for reforms in the United Nations reflects the need to address the ineffectiveness of the Security Council and rebuild trust in multilateral institutions. The support from the Global South further emphasizes the urgency for reform in the UN architecture.
