LinkedIn has announced that it will be cutting over 600 positions in its engineering and product teams. In an email sent to employees on Monday, the company stated that it did not expect to share this update but felt it necessary. The layoffs will primarily affect the R&D divisions, with 137 engineering management roles and 38 product roles being cut. Additionally, the engineering team will see 368 positions eliminated in an effort to better align resources with LinkedIn’s FY24 plan. Affected staff were advised to expect an email within the hour to learn whether they were among those being laid off.
A press release from LinkedIn stated that approximately 668 roles will be impacted the layoffs. The company acknowledged that talent changes are a difficult but necessary part of managing the business, and assured that support will be provided to all affected employees.
This is not the first round of layoffs for LinkedIn this year. In May, the company announced plans to cut around 716 roles from its global workforce. LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky cited shifts in customer behavior and slower revenue growth as reasons for the layoffs, emphasizing the need to adapt their strategy.
LinkedIn is not alone in implementing job cuts this year. Several major tech companies, including Google, Microsoft, and Meta, have also initiated layoffs amidst economic concerns.
Prior to the official announcement, rumors of the layoffs began circulating on the anonymous workplace forum Blind, where LinkedIn employees discussed the impending news.
The full text of the email sent to employees detailed the rationale behind the reductions, emphasizing the company’s focus on achieving its business goals and improving efficiency. Those directly affected the layoff will receive a calendar invitation for a meeting that will provide further information and support during the transition.
