London Mayor Sadiq Khan organized the annual Diwali celebration at Trafalgar Square on Sunday. The event, from 1 pm to 7 pm, featured Indian traditional dances, music, activities, and food from various parts of India, capturing the essence of the festival.
Attendees enjoyed performances London’s Hindu, Sikh, and Jain communities, as well as yoga workshops, puppet shows, and more. Sadiq Khan praised the event for embodying Diwali’s symbolic victory of light over darkness.
The Diwali celebrations attracted residents from all backgrounds across the UK. James, a local teacher who experienced Diwali for the first time, described the experience as “absolutely incredible” and called Diwali an amazing festival.
Artists performed traditional and Bollywood dances, including popular songs like ‘Jai Ho’ and ‘Jo Hai Albela.’ Visitors also indulged in delicious Indian food.
An Indian-origin girl who attended the event outside of India said it felt like home away from home and that the festive atmosphere was the perfect beginning for Diwali. She also expressed joy at getting to meet new people and satisfy her cravings for Indian food.
Another Indian-origin attendee highlighted the enthusiasm of non-Indians celebrating the festival and appreciated the presence of the mayor.
Vivian, a local resident experiencing Diwali at Trafalgar Square for the first time, enjoyed the festive atmosphere and the friendly people. She described Diwali as the festival of lights.
This year, Diwali will be celebrated on Sunday, November 12.
