Elon Musk Implements New Policy to Combat Misinformation on X

In a recent post on X, Elon Musk announced a change to the platform’s creator monetization. He stated that posts on X that are corrected Community Notes will no longer be eligible for revenue share.

Musk tweeted, “Making a slight change to creator monetization: Any posts that are corrected @CommunityNotes become ineligible for revenue share. The idea is to maximize the incentive for accuracy over sensationalism.”

However, Musk also emphasized that using Community Notes to attack other users in order to demonetize them would be obvious, as the code and data of Community Notes are open source. This change comes after reports that X has become a hub for misinformation and extremism since Musk purchased the platform a year ago.

Posts Corrected Community Notes Will Lose Monetization

If X users post misinformation that is later corrected Community Notes, their posts will be demonetized. X has faced significant scrutiny for the presence of misinformation and fake news on its platform, even from verified accounts. The platform has also gained attention in the midst of global conflicts.

Elon Musk and the Battle Against Misinformation on X

X has faced criticism for its handling of content online, particularly due to the widespread presence of misinformation. Elon Musk has been a target of criticism for this issue.

One recent example is the Israel-Hamas conflict, during which independent researchers and fact-checkers warned of a surge in misinformation on X. The European Union (EU) even alerted X about this problem. In response, X took action to address this issue.

While X does not heavily remove fake news from its platform, as Musk believes in free speech, features like Community Notes provide a way for legitimate information to reach users.

Community Notes allows users to act as watchers for X’s content, correcting information without removing it entirely. Now, Musk’s decision to demonetize those who share misinformation on X is one of his strategies to combat fake news on the platform, although it may not completely eliminate the problem.
