K Suganthi, a 50-year-old woman, has dedicated the past 26 years of her life to providing crucial medical care to ill and pregnant women in the Sri Lankan refugee camp located in the Srivilliputhur area of Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu. Her unwavering commitment has earned her the title of a modern-day Florence Nightingale.

Despite Florence Nightingale’s passing over a century ago, her legacy lives on through individuals like K Suganthi, who tirelessly serve their communities. Suganthi has become a guardian angel for anaemic pregnant mothers in need of medical attention, saving countless lives in the process.

Suganthi’s journey began in 1996 when she started her career as an auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM). Little did she know that her dedication and compassion would lead her to receive the prestigious Florence Nightingale Award from the President of India in 2023. Born in Thoothukudi district, Suganthi’s family resettled in Virudhunagar during her sixth grade.

After obtaining her nursing qualification, Suganthi was employed as an ANM in a village near Karur. In 1997, she was transferred to the Perumal Devan Patti health sub-centre in Reddiapatti, where she has been serving the communities of Perumal Devan Patti, Narikuruvar Kalani, and the Sri Lankan Refugee Camp ever since.

These areas, predominantly inhabited tribal communities, are often considered underserved and face challenges in trusting outsiders. However, Suganthi’s warmth and caring nature have enabled her to win the hearts of the locals over the years. When a pregnant woman is diagnosed with a high-risk condition, Suganthi remains her side throughout the hospital stay and recovery process, ensuring the best possible care.

In addition to her remarkable dedication, Suganthi also extended her assistance to about 25 Narikurava families during the COVID-19 pandemic. She not only provided essential medical care to expectant mothers but also offered grains to support these vulnerable families. Dr. Karunagaraprabhu, the Block Medical Officer, commended Suganthi’s relentless efforts, stating that her oversight ensured every child in the hamlet received their immunizations.

Suganthi’s relentless service and selfless hard work over the past 26 years have finally gained recognition. She was bestowed with the Florence Nightingale Award the President of India, marking a well-deserved milestone in her career.

As K Suganthi continues to be a beacon of hope and support for her community, her remarkable achievements inspire others to follow in her footsteps. Her unwavering commitment to providing essential healthcare services has rightfully earned her the title of a modern-day Florence Nightingale.
