Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has made promises to the people of Chhattisgarh ahead of the state elections. Speaking at an election rally in the Bhanupratappur assembly constituency in Kanker district, Gandhi pledged free education in government schools and colleges if his party retains power. He also announced that ‘tendu’ leaves collectors would receive Rs 4,000 per year under the Rajiv Gandhi Protsahan Yojana. These promises are seen as significant in the tribal-dominated Bastar region.
In addition to his promises, Gandhi called for a caste census in the country and questioned why Prime Minister Narendra Modi is hesitant about it. He reiterated that if the Congress comes to power, a caste census will be conducted. Bhanupratappur is one of the 20 constituencies set to vote on November 7 in the first phase of the Chhattisgarh elections, followed the second phase on November 17.
Gandhi further outlined the Congress’ commitment to the welfare of farmers, Dalits, laborers, and Adivasis, contrasting it with the BJP-led Centre, which he claimed primarily serves the interests of a few industrialists. He also expressed his objection to the use of ‘vanvasi’ instead of ‘Adivasi’ to refer to tribals, considering it an insult to their culture, history, and language.
During his speech, Gandhi briefly paused to attend to a person who had fainted, demonstrating his concern for the well-being of the attendees.
The Congress leader emphasized that the party has fulfilled significant promises made prior to the previous assembly elections in Chhattisgarh.
Overall, Rahul Gandhi’s rally focused on education, welfare, and social justice issues, appealing to voters in the upcoming state elections.
