British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has always been a keen expresser for the love of cricket, and now he has taken a big step towards contributing to the sport announcing a £35 million plan to boost grassroot cricket in the United Kingdom (UK) on Friday, April 5.

This amount will be invested over the next five years in the grassroots and state school cricket in the UK.

With the help of the funds, 16 cutting-edge outdoor all-weather cricket domes will be constructed in towns all throughout England to host matches during the two T20 World Cups that will take place: the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup and 2030 Men’s T20 World Cup.

The ACE (Afro-Caribbean Engagement) Program, Chance to Shine, and the Lord’s Taverners, three cricket charities, will split a £14 million funding boost in an effort to assist the game reach more public schools, where it has declined in popularity in recent years.

”2,500 pieces of new equipment to every school involved in the program, and help to get 930,000 pupils playing cricket over the next five years” are the anticipated benefits of that expenditure.

What did Rishi Sunak say about this development?

Rishi Sunak recalled the first time he watched cricket as a child and hoped that this investment would be the trigger that encourages more youngsters to take up the sport.

I first experienced the magic of cricket watching Hampshire play at my local ground in Southampton as a child.

For young people watching their first match today, the draw of getting outside and enjoying the game is just as strong, particularly as we look forward to hosting the women’s and men’s T20 World Cups.

There remains huge potential to grow the sport even further and open it up to everyone, from all backgrounds and in all parts of the country, building on the great work of organisations such as ACE and Chance to Shine.

That is why I am so proud we are making a major £35 million investment in grass-roots cricket today, to widen participation in schools, encourage health lifestyles and provide world-class, all-year-round facilities for local communities.
