India’s star bowler Jasprit Bumrah could reportedly be handed rest for the third Test against England in Rajkot, according to a report by Cricbuzz.

Bumrah put in a clinical bowling performance in the second Test in Visakhapatnam, claiming nine wickets in the match to help India win the game 106 runs and level the five-match series 1-1.

His figures of 6-45 in the 1st innings helped Bumrah set and break a couple of records, including the record for the fewest no. of Tests and balls taken an Indian pacer to reach 150 wickets.

Having shown his class in the first two Tests, it now looks like the bowler will be given a break in the third Test.

Jasprit Bumrah to be allowed to rest, will be back for last two Tests

Per the report, the team management and selectors will potentially not include Bumrah in the squad for the third Test to manage his workload.

Over the course of the two Tests, the 30-year-pacer has bowled almost 58 overs  – 24.4 overs in the first Test and 33.1 in the second Test.

He was used more often in the Vizag Test, bowling the most overs among any Indian bowler.

Given Bumrah’s poor injury record, the selection panel’s decision to rest Bumrah can be considered very reasonable.

The selectors are likely to call up Mohammed Siraj, who received a similar rest for the second Test. Siraj will undoubtedly spearhead the attack in the third Test match before teaming up with Bumrah for the last two Test matches of the series.

Given that Mohammed Shami, the other established match-winning pacer in Test cricket, is not yet ready for an international return following an injury, managing the workload for the two fast bowlers has become paramount.

What next for India?

The squad for the upcoming Test(s) should be announced in the coming days, with many fans anticipating Virat Kohli’s return.

India will take on England at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot in the third Test, which begins on February 15.
