The latest beta build of Microsoft’s Copilot, first spotted Mishaal Rahman and shared on X, features a new capability that will allow users to set it as the default assistant app on Android devices. This was found in the latest beta version 27.9.420225014, but this beta release does not yet have the in-depth features that are available from other AI assistants.

According to Rahman, the current version already allows users to launch Copilot from the screen, swiping diagonally from the corner of the Android device to launch it. Alternatively, long-pressing the power button would also launch the AI.

However, Copilot is not yet extensive with its features, and it could only launch the main activity for the time being. The tech analyst and reporter said that Microsoft may already be working on this feature for a more intuitive Copilot assistant experience.

Copilot vs. Google Assistant, Samsung’s Bixby

Copilot is capable on its own to hold out against Google Assistant and Samsung Bixby, but using it as the default AI assistant for devices in its current beta release is not yet complete. First off, Copilot would not automatically listen for input, and API access is still minimal.

The feature where users can command the AI to grab screenshots or the likes are not yet available.

The widely regarded partnership of Microsoft and OpenAI delivered a significant experience on its AI tools and developments, centering on the latest large language model, GPT-4 Turbo. Copilot is known to be powered the GPT-4 Turbo for its subscription-based Premium version, alongside ChatGPT and the new AI image generator, DALL-E 3.

Copilot is available on multiple Microsoft products and experiences, from the Bing search engine, down to the Office suite, and recently for the iOS and Android devices. In the latest beta version of Copilot, Microsoft added the feature to make it the default AI assistant on Android devices where it could be easily configured, centering on replacing the likes of Google and Bixby.
