Among the international stars participating in the 2024 edition of the league was former Pakistan all-rounder and captain Shoaib Malik, part of the Fortune Barishal squad. Barishal have lost two of their three matches so far, and sit second from bottom of the league table.
Why did Shoaib Malik leave the BPL? Is he being investigated for match-fixing?
On Monday, Barishal took on Khulna Tigers in Mirpur. They scored 187/4 batting first, thanks to Mushfiqur Rahim’s 68*. However, Khulna chased down the target in 18 overs with 8 wickets in hand.
During the course of the chase, Malik came on to bowl his off-spin in the fourth over of the innings. It was his only over, conceding 18 runs and bowling 3 no-balls as well. The over went viral on social media.
3 no-balls and 18 runs in one over. Not the best outing this week for Shoaib Malik.

On Thursday, it was announced that Malik would be leaving the team and he would be replaced Pakistani batter Ahmed Shehzad, expected to join the squad Februrary 6th. It was initially reported that Malik had asked for permission to spend time with his new wife, Sana Javed after his divorce from Indian tennis star Sania Mirza.
However, according to Bangladeshi journalist Syed Sami, the real reason for Malik’s departure is that his contract has been terminated Fortune Barishal on suspicion of match-fixing during his over against Khulna.
🚨 BREAKING: Fortune Barisal has terminated the contract of Shoaib Malik on the suspicion of “fixing”. During a recent match, Malik, who is a spinner, bowled three no balls in one over. Mizanur Rahman, the team owner of Fortune Barishal, has confirmed the news. #BPL2024 pic.twitter.com/wOh6yE6hoT

It remains to be seen whether the league or the Bangladesh Cricket Board will open a formal investigation into the matter, but at the moment it is not a good spot for Malik to be in.
