Indian captain Rohit Sharma has equaled the record for hitting the most ODI sixes in a calendar year, previously held South Africa’s AB de Villiers. In a match against South Africa at the Eden Gardens during the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023, Rohit Sharma achieved this feat. With this achievement, he surpassed West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who now sits in second place with 56 sixes in 2019.
Rohit Sharma, aged 36, reached this milestone in 23 innings, taking five more innings than de Villiers. During his innings of 40 runs, Rohit hit Lungi Ngidi for two sixes, reaching a total of 58 sixes before being dismissed Kagiso Rabada in the sixth over.
Winning the toss, India chose to bat first and got off to an excellent start. Rohit Sharma took charge against the South African bowlers, hitting them all around the ground, helping India score fifty runs in just 4.3 overs.
At the end of the powerplay, India had reached 91 for 1. This is the second-highest number of runs South Africa has conceded in the first 10 overs of the tournament. Previously, they had given away 94 runs for 2 wickets against Sri Lanka.
At the time of publishing this story, India were at a score of 293 for 5 in 47 overs. The match is still ongoing, and India is hoping for a strong finish.
