Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has been suspended the International Cricket Council (ICC) just a day after the country ended its 2023 Cricket World Cup campaign. The suspension comes as a result of SLC’s inability to manage its affairs autonomously and allowing government interference, which led to the dissolution of the board. The decision was announced ICC through an official statement, where they stated that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member.
The board met online on November 10 to discuss the situation and found Sri Lanka Cricket guilty of allowing government involvement in governance, financing, and national team matters. This move follows a resolution passed the Sri Lankan parliament to sack the entire SLC board.
As a result of the suspension, both men’s and women’s Sri Lankan cricket teams, along with their youth teams, will not be allowed to participate in competitions governed ICC until the suspension is lifted. This development comes after Sri Lanka’s poor performance in the ongoing Cricket World Cup, where they finished ninth among 10 teams.
With the suspension in place, the Sri Lankan teams are set to miss out on upcoming cricket events, including those organized ICC. The odds for the potential winners of the 2023 World Cup currently favor India and Australia, with India being the clear favorite. With the ongoing tournament put into question, fans can now place their bets on the potential winners.
