The US Navy Plans to Test AI for Tracking Chinese Submarines in the Pacific Ocean

US, Australia, and UK to Use AI to Track Chinese Submarines in the Pacific

Defense leaders from the US, UK, and Australia met in Mountain View, California to announce new plans aimed at using advanced AI to track Chinese submarines in the Pacific as part of the Aukus Pillar II alliance between the countries.

The new efforts involve the use of AI on patrol aircraft to process information from underwater detection devices used each country. This will enable the nations to track Chinese submarines with greater speed and accuracy, thereimproving their anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

In addition to AI, the three countries are collaborating in other technological areas such as quantum technologies, electronic warfare, and hypersonic weapons.

The move comes in response to China’s growing military assertiveness in the Pacific, which was underscored a recent incident in which Australian naval divers were injured a Chinese warship’s sonar weapon.

Speaking at the joint meeting, Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles emphasized the need for collaboration in response to China’s rising aggression, urging all countries, including China, to operate their militaries in a professional and safe manner.

The Pentagon’s recent China Military Power Report highlighted a significant concern about the possibility of an operational incident or miscalculation spiraling into crisis or conflict.

The use of advanced AI and other cutting-edge technologies reflects efforts the US, Australia, and the UK to sustain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
