The Indian tourism ministry, in collaboration with key stakeholders, has revealed a draft National Tourism Policy for 2023 aimed at boosting tourism’s impact on the country’s economy. The policy seeks to increase visitor numbers, duration of stays, and overall spending while positioning India as a year-round tourist destination. According to Union Tourism and Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy, another key objective is to generate employment opportunities and attract private investment to the tourism sector. Additionally, the policy aims to preserve and enhance India’s cultural and natural resources through sustainable and responsible tourism development.
Reddy emphasized that the draft policy encourages innovation, explores new markets, and aligns tourism with sustainable development goals. It was developed in consultation with central ministries, state tourism departments, and industry stakeholders. Additionally, the ministry has implemented initiatives to promote various tourist circuits and has allocated funds for projects under the Himalayan Circuit.
Furthermore, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has launched the Baba Saheb Ambedkar Yatra the Bharat Gaurav tourist train, reflecting the ministry’s efforts to promote and popularize special tourism initiatives. Overall, the draft National Tourism Policy seeks to enhance the competitiveness of India’s tourism sector and promote sustainable and inclusive development.
