ZPM defeats MNF in Mizoram polls, securing 27 out of 40 seats

Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has achieved a decisive victory in Mizoram, securing 27 seats in the 40-member House and toppling the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF). Among the prominent ZPM winners is the party’s CM face Lalduhoma, who defeated his MNF rival J Malsawmzuala Vanchhawng 2,982 votes in the Serchhip seat.

The MNF won nine seats and was leading in one, while the BJP secured the Palak and Saiha seats. Additionally, the Indian National Congress claimed victory in the Lawngtlai West seat.

Several high-profile MNF candidates suffered defeats, including the Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia, Health Minister R Lalthangliana, and Rural Development Minister Laruatkima. MNF chief Zoramthanga also lost to ZPM’s Lalthansanga 2,101 votes.

ZPM emerged victorious in various constituencies across Mizoram, while the MNF won in several others. The counting of votes took place in 13 centres, with a total of 174 candidates, including 18 women, in the fray. The MNF, ZPM, Congress, and BJP contested 40 seats each, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and 17 Independent candidates also participating in the election.

The election, held on November 7, saw more than 80% of the state’s 8.57 lakh voters exercising their franchise. Over 4,000 personnel were involved in the counting process, with a total of 399 tables for the EVMs and 56 for the counting of postal ballots.

The ZPM’s landslide victory in Mizoram marks a significant political shift in the state and sets the stage for potential changes in governance and policy.
